What Travelers Need to Know About Auto Transporters and Car Shipping

If you are wondering what you need to know to protect yourself when choosing a company to ship a car or truck, there are several points to be aware of. For calculating costs, you can see it here. The Better Business Bureau offers the following advice to spot a potentially bogus auto transporter website. Look at the overall quality of the site. A legitimate company’s website will be free of spelling and grammatical errors.

A legitimate transporter will ask for a check or credit card, not a wire transfer. Wire an “autotransporter” money and all you will have to show for it will be a receipt from the wire service. Do not hire an auto transporter that does not provide a Motor Carrier Number upon request. Even if they actually provide the service, they advertise they are operating illegally.

Finding a Transporter

A friend, relative, or local car club might be able to recommend an auto transporter. If you use the internet to find a transport service here is some advice. Visit the websites of multiple transporters. Choose a company that has been in business a while. Take the time to review the transporter’s terms and conditions.

Let us say you are considering a company we will call Direct Express Auto Transport. Type that name plus the word “complaints” into a search engine to get an idea of their reputation. Other sources for investigating an auto transporter are the FMCSA’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Records website and the Better Business Bureau website.

Multi-Quote Websites

Multi-quote websites can be used if you cannot find a transporter on your own. There are a couple of things you need to be aware of before using A multi-quote site. After providing your information you will likely be swamped with calls and emails from transporters. Once the site gives you a quote there is no guarantee they will find a transporter willing to meet the quote.

It’s important to know how auto transport works. Numerous factors go into calculating the cost of shipping a vehicle. The weight of the car or truck is one factor in determining shipping costs. The next factor is the transport distance and what the transporter will spend on fuel to cover that distance. The time between the vehicle being picked-up can be as long as 30 days.

Additional Costs

Delivering a vehicle to a rural area costs more than delivering to an urban area. Shipping a vehicle during the off-season can save money. Extra charges will be added for modified vehicles i.e.; a truck with a lift kit or a car with extra-wide tires.

Know the warning signs of a potentially fraudulent auto transporter website like multiple misspellings. Do not wire money to a transporter and always ask for a Motor Carrier Number. Online visit more than one auto transporter site and read the terms and conditions. More than vehicle weight goes into determining shipping costs. You can save money by shipping a vehicle during certain times of the year.
