From November 3rd to 5th, the 13th Great Sichuan Road International Cultural Tourism Festival was successfully held in Zengjia Mountain Scenic Area, Chaotian District, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, China. Nearly 1,000 people from Sichuan, Shanxi, Gansu and Chongqing participated in the series of activities, including leaders from relevant international organizations, overseas organizations in China, guests from international tourism agencies, and representatives from relevant industry associations and entrepreneurs in China. Relevant experts and scholars brainstormed around the theme of “Protect, Explore, and Share the Culture of the Great Sichuan Road” and actively offered suggestions for carrying forward the history and culture of the Great Sichuan Road and constructing the international cultural tourism destination and the health resort of the Great Sichuan Road. The activity presented the ecological and beautiful environment of Zengjia Mountain in Guangyuan to the world, and it demonstrated the profound historical and cultural charm of the Sichuan Road.

The Sichuan Road is an ancient Chinese route that led from Chang’an to the Sichuan region. It traversed the Qinling and Daba Mountains, with steep terrain and rugged paths, making it challenging to traverse. The difficulty of traversing the Sichuan Road is greater than reaching the blue sky….” This line is from the poem “The Difficulties of the Sichuan Road” by the Chinese Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai and vividly portrays the hardships of traveling the Sichuan Road. In contemporary academic research, ‘The Sichuan Road’ typically denotes the routes that connect the Guanzhong Plain to Hanzhong, such as the Baoye Road, Chencang Road, Ziwu Road, Tangluo Road, and the roads from Hanzhong to Sichuan, including the Jinniu Road, Micang Road, and Lizhi Road, among others.

The Sichuan Road was the main north-south communication artery in ancient China. From Guanzhong Plain to Sichuan Basin, it connects northwest to southwest. The ancient Sichuan Road has a long history, spanning over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest preserved large-scale transportation relics in human history, even older than the ancient Roman roads. Some experts argue that the ancient Sichuan Road is not only unique to China but also to the world. The “Sichuan Road for World Heritage” initiative started in 2011, with Jinniu Road as one of its routes. Jinniu Road begins in the south at Chengdu, then traverses Guanghan, Deyang, Luojiang, Mianyang, and Zitong, crossing the Jianshan and Xiaojian Mountains. It continues through Guangyuan before exiting Sichuan. It then turns left near Baocheng in Shaanxi, follows the Bao River through the Shimen Pass, crosses the Qinling Mountains, exits Xiegu and directly enters the fertile plains of Qin.

Guangyuan City is situated at the crossroads of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. It has long held the distinction of being the “gateway to northern Sichuan and the key to Qin and Shu,” playing a pivotal role in the historical network of the ancient Jinniu Road. The city is renowned for its meticulously designed landscapes and the authentic preservation of the Jianmen Shu Road, which encompasses notable sites such as Cuiyun Pass, Jianmen Pass, Zhaohua Ancient City, Huangze Temple, Thousand Buddha Cliff, Mingyue Gorge, Chibi Post and more. These locations have risen to prominence as significant historical and cultural landmarks along the ancient Shu Road. Over nearly two decades of development and construction, Zengjiashan in Guangyuan has transformed into a well-established summer retreat and health resort along the Sichuan Road.

Whether in ancient or modern times, the Sichuan Road has always held a crucial position in the economic and cultural development of China. During the long historical periods when maritime transportation was underdeveloped, such as in the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Sichuan Road was the essential route from the capital to the southwest and even to neighboring countries in the southwest. It held the same significance as the ancient Silk Road that connected the east and west. Besides, throughout history, the Sichuan Road has played a significant role in the development of China’s economy, the Integration of its diverse ethnic groups, the exchange of cultures, and the consolidation of political power. The historical relics along the Sichuan Road are not only national treasures but also the common cultural and natural heritage of mankind throughout the world.
